A Brief Bio
Gypsy George & the Open Road Love Affair has been described as “if Kurt Vonnegut and the ghost of folk music took an epic roadtrip.” Indeed, the sound and aim of Gypsy George and his band (made up of a deliciously revolving door of musical compatriots) is to recreate the mood, melody, and modulating air of a random road trip through music.
‘Gypsy’ George Mihalopoulos, himself, is a vastly traveled (hence the 'Gypsy') man of many musical hats. A rare, true multi-instrumentalist (guitar, piano, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, bass, harmonica, vocals, drums, bouzouki, and programming, a composer/songwriter), he is also an engineer and producer, music director and supervisor, and a fan. He has lived and journeyed all over the world absorbing the local influences into his unique musical style. His sound is like the terrain he's navigated: ever changing, rich, rolling, eclectic, and yet somehow all part of the same countryside. As a child, he was immersed in and inspired by a vast array of music ranging from The Beatles to Elvis Costello to Dionysis Savvopoulos.
Gypsy George & the Open Road Love Affair’s most recent albums, Caollaidhe, 30 Songs In 30 Days, & Loneliest Man in New York, have been featured on numerous European radio stations (including UK, Greece, France, Germany & Denmark) as well as numerous blogs and online magazines (including The Noise Beneath the Apple, Largehearted Boy, Music Historian, Park Slope Stoop, and Music Junkies). Critics have described the music as a “good soundtrack for your next road trip (Music Junkies),” “…like a Kurt Vonnegut novel…a wave of oddness that is charming if not just a little bizarre (The Noise Beneath the Apple).” Furthermore, The National Herald (a prominent publication on Greek-American and Hellenic Diaspora news & culture) conducted a full-length interview with Gypsy George about life as a musician and artist.
Gypsy runs and operates his own boutique music company, Always Already, producing and recording numerous acts (That Moon, Ryan Lamm, Brother Hamm, Pastel Hell, Barefoot & Bankside, Frankie M. George) as well as handling composing and licensing. He's also had his musical hand in numerous projects for film, television and the stage, including Salma Hayek’s directorial debut The Maldonado Miracle, The Brother’s Garcia, Planet’s Funniest Animals, and South Slope Shakespeare. As one art has the tenancy to feed another... Gypsy is also a painter, sketch artist, photographer and writer. His paintings have been featured in Cafés in Brooklyn and New York and he is approaching publication on his first short novel (as yet untitled). He holds a Bachelor’s in Literature from Northwestern University.
